OpenVPN Windows Setup (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10)

Introduction

To download our OpenVPN Windows client software, use the following tutorial guide. We will walk you through the necessary steps to connect to a VPN server using our OpenVPN Windows configuration files and the OpenVPN GUI on your Windows device.

The OpenVPN GUI is a free, open-source software available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

The following steps and screenshots are for Windows 8.1, but the steps should be similar enough for other versions of Windows.

Guide

  1. Download the OpenVPN configuration files

    • To set up the OpenVPN GUI on your computer, you will need to download SaferVPN OpenVPN configuration files from here.
    • Find the location(s) you want to connect to (e.g., USA East, Germany etc..), then download and save the .ovpn file(s) to your Downloads folder. You will need these files for Step 3.

  2. Download and install the OpenVPN GUI

    • Click on the link: https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/downloads.html. 
    • Save the installer "openvpn-****.exe" file for your operating system to your Downloads folder.
    • Launch the installer file by double clicking it and complete the installation by going through the installation steps.  

  3. Configure the OpenVPN GUI with SaferVPN OpenVPN configuration files

    • Now you will configure the OpenVPN GUI with the .ovpn configuration files you downloaded in step 1.
    • Open the Windows File Explorer and go to the following path:C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\ directory
    • Copy all the .ovpn files you downloaded in step 1 to configure the directory: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config\ 

  4. Connect to SaferVPN

    • Right-click on the OpenVPN GUI shortcut on the Desktop and choose Run as admin to launch it.
    • Launching the OpenVPN GUI will add an OpenVPN GUI icon to the system tray.
    • Right-click the OpenVPN GUI icon in the system tray.
    • You will see a list of all the servers. Hover over your preferred VPN server, then click Connect.
    • When the connection has been established, a speech bubble will notify you of your new connected status.

  5. Disconnect from SaferVPN

    • Right-click the OpenVPN GUI icon in the system tray.
    • You will see a list of all the servers. Hover over VPN server you are connected to, then click Disconnect.
