Manual PPTP setup on Mikrotik Router

Introduction

Before you begin, please make sure that:

  • You have a working internet connection
  • MikroTik PPTP Supported Router
  • A SaferVPN account 

To set up SaferVPN on Mikrotik router using PPTP settings, follow our step by step guide detailed below:

PPTP setup on Mikrotik router

  1. Log in to the Mikrotik router, using the standard username “admin”, with a blank password
  2. Then click on the PPP tab on the left-side menu. This will open the Interfacetab
  3. Now click on the +sign and select PPTP Client

  4. This will open the New Interface window, fill in the fields as described below:

    Name: In this field, you can enter anything you like, for example “SaferVPN PPTP”
    Type: PPTP client
    L2 MTU: Blank
    Max MTU: Leave it as default, i.e., 1450
    Max MRU: Leave it as default, i.e., 1450
    MRRU: Blank

  5. Now click on the Dial Out tab, and follow the steps given below:

    Connect To:Choose any server IP or hostname from one of the SaferVPN servers. Please refer How to find SaferVPN server IP
    User: Your SaferVPN Username.
    Password: Your SaferVPN password.
    Profile: Default-encryption. 
    Keepalive Timeout: 60
    Check-mark the dial on demand and add default route options
    Allow: Keep all authentication methods checked.

    Click on Apply/OK after verifying all the inputs.

  1. Go to the IPtab on the left-side bar and select Firewall. Then click on the NAT tab and then click on + sign, as shown below:

    Choose scrnat from chain and SaferVPN-PPTP from Out Interface List

  2. Now, click the Action tab and select masquerade from the dropdown list. Click Apply/OK to save the settings.

  3. Once you're back to the Firewall window, click on the Mangle tab and then click on the +sign:

  4. In the New Mangle Rulewindow, go to the General tab and follow the steps below:

    Chain: Select Prerouting from the drop-down menu. 
    Address: Here you need to enter the IP range that you want to have routed through the VPN connection. For ex: - 192.168.5.150-192.168.5.250 (assuming the router is 192.168.5.5)

    Click OK after verifying the inputs.

  5. On the same window click on the Actiontab and edit the following settings: 

    Action: Select mark routing from the drop-down menu. 
    New Routing Mark: In this field enter any name from the routing mark, for ex- PPTP
    Passthrough: Activated

    Click on OK after verifying the inputs.

  6. Now click onIP on the left side of the menu. This will open the Router List window, click on Routers and then click on the sign. In the new window, on the General tab edit the following settings:

    Address:  This should be 0.0.0.0/0
    Gateway: Here you need to enter the name of the VPN connection that you have created,  for ex- SaferVPN PPTP from the drop-down menu. 
    Routing Mask: Select PPTP from the drop-down menu. 

    Click on OK after verifying all the inputs.

  7. Adjust the DNS settings. Go to the IP in the left side of the menu and click on DNS.
  8. Select Static and then click on the + sign. A new window will open.
  1. Edit the settings as shown below:

    Name:OpenDNS
    Address:67.222.222

    Click on OK after verifying the inputs.

  2. Again, click on the sign, but enter the following name in the Namefield.
    Name: OpenDNS1
    Address:67.220.220

    Click on OK after verifying the inputs.

  3. Once Again click on the sign, and fill the input fields as shown below: 
    Name:Google
    Address:8.8.8

    Click on OK after verifying the inputs.

  4. Repeat the step again, click on the +sign, and fill the input fields as shown below: 
    Name: Google1
    Address:8.4.4

    Click on OK after verifying the inputs.

  5. Now in the DNS Settingswindow:

    Allow Remote Requests: Activate 
    And click on OK.
