I appear in a different location than the one I selected

Introduction

A Virtual Private Network, also known as a VPN, is a technology that hides one's real IP address and encrypts all the incoming and outgoing data while using the Internet. Through this, the user gets anonymity and safety.

SaferVPN allows you to connect to more than 400 servers in 30+ countries across the globe and allows for the possibility to use remote network resources as though you are physically there. Simply install SaferVPN Software, enter your SaferVPN Username and Password, and click the connect button.

I appear in a different location than the one I selected

When you select a particular country/server to connect to, you should be connected to that particular country’s IP address. Sometimes in-spite of selecting a particular country’s server you get connected to a different country then what you had selected.

There may be a couple of reasons behind why this is happening. In this article we will discuss the reasons behind this issue:

  1. Browser History: - Some search engines (ex: Google) see your current location and then redirect you to the local version of their search engine. If you are in Germany and you type Google.com, you would then be redirected to Google.de.

And when you visit a website, third-party trackers (such as cookies, web beacons, flash cookies, pixel tags, etc) are usually stored in your browser history (unless you have disabled this function, or clear your browser history regularly).

We recommend you to open your browser in incognito mode. Refer to this link on how to open your browser in incognito mode.

  2. Location Service of your device: - Check if you have enabled the location service on your device (especially on Mobiles phones). When the location service on your mobile device is turned on, your phone is logging your location on the device itself in real-time.

For those who are using an iPhone, you might see that the app has already identified and labeled where your home and work places are. This is typically due to an algorithm, or formula used by Apple, that assumes your phone regularly stays in one place at night and recognizes it as your home, whereas if it stays in another place during the day, every day, that must be your workplace.

So, when you have connected to the SaferVPN server with the location service on in the background, then the location services accessed by your phone will be determined by the GPS and not the IP address.

We recommend you turn off the location settings before connecting to the SaferVPN server.

  3. Social Media Platforms and Email Providers: - When you are connected to the Internet without a VPN service, your computer shares your IP address with every website and social media platform you visit. Services like Gmail, Twitter, and Facebook, record your location data in a way that you can access and disable.

In Gmail go to → Details, then 'Last account activity' on the right at the bottom of any Gmail page.
On Twitter go to → Settings → Your Twitter Data → Login history → enter your password
However, some social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter allow its users to 'check in' to a public place like a restaurant, bar, museum, shop, or public building.

And when you connect to the SaferVPN server it may cause conflict.

We recommend you to turn off the location settings before connecting to the SaferVPN server.
