Manual OpenVPN setup for Tomato Router

In order to set up SaferVPN on Tomato router, follow our step by step guide detailed below:

OpenVPN Setup for Tomato Router

  1. Login to your Tomato based router’s control panel. To do so, type http://192.168.1.1/ in your browser and log in with your router username and password.




  2. On your router’s control panel, click on the VPN Tunneling tab and then select OpenVPN Client and then Basic.

    In the Basic settings do the following:



    Start with WAN: Check
    Interface Type: TUN
    Protocol: Choose between TCP and UDP
    Server Address/Port: Enter the IP address of the server you wish to connect to. Click here
    Port: For UDP enter 1194 and for TCP 443
    Firewall: Automatic
    Authorization Mode: TLS
    Username/Password Authentication: Check
    Username: SaferVPN Username
    Password: SaferVPN Password
    Extra HMAC Authorisation: Disabled
    Create NAT on tunnel: Check

    Now click on Save.

  3. Switch to the Advanced tab. In the Advanced settings do the following:

    Poll interval: 0
    Redirect Traffic: Check
    Accept DNS configuration: Disabled
    Encryption cipher: AES-256-CBC
    Compression: Enabled
    TSL Regeneration Time: -1
    Connection retry: 30 (or you may set -1 for infinite)
    In Custom Configuration enter: 

    Persist-key
    Persist-tun
    Tls-client
    auth-user-pass /tmp/password.txt
    Comp-lzo
    verb 
    reneg-sec 0

    Next click on Save.

  4. Click on the Keys tab. Fill in the fields as described below:



    In Certificate Authority please enter the content of “ca.crt” which you can download from here: Link

    Now click on Save.

  5. Your router is now configured for OpenVPN. In order to establish the connection, you need to click Start Now button.
